At this site there are hot springs, “Kalirho Springs”, which means “beautiful springs”. The site was mentioned by Josephus [The Jewish War 1:33:5], as well as Pliny, and many Arab and foreign Jewish and Christian travelers.

These hot springs are located in the Ain al-Zarqa area, on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. King Herod the Great came to them for treatment during his severe illness before his death in Jericho, where he was buried in his castle (al-Fardis) near Bethlehem. The place appears on the map of Madaba and contains three locations: (from left to right) a circular pool and a water spring that flows into the Dead Sea Next to it is a water spring that flows into a rectangular tank, and its water flows into the Dead Sea. Next to it is a pool of water in the form of a dam whose water also flows into the Dead Sea.
