The site of Umm ar-Rasas, historically known as Mefaa, is located about 30 km south of Madaba and is one of the most prominent archaeological sites in Jordan. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 due to its exceptional historical value, reflecting the succession of multiple civilizations in one place.

The site dates back to the Roman era, having been established in the 3rd century AD as a fortified military center. During the Byzantine period, it transformed into a prosperous city that became one of the most important Christian centers in the region. Its use continued through the early Islamic period until the 9th century AD, making it a living testament to the region’s transition between successive historical phases.

The site includes the remains of a large Roman fortress, along with a network of streets, residential buildings, and water systems, reflecting an advanced level of urban planning. Umm ar-Rasas is also renowned for its numerous Byzantine churches, estimated at around 16, most of which date back to the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

One of the site’s most prominent landmarks is the Church of St. Stephen, whose mosaic floor is among the largest and most important mosaics in Jordan, dating back to 785 AD. It features intricate decorations and inscriptions depicting cities and regions of the ancient world, reflecting the development of art in the early Islamic period and the continuity of Byzantine traditions.

The area also includes other churches of historical significance, such as the Church of St. Paul, which preserves distinctive mosaic floors from the Byzantine era, along with the remains of religious and residential buildings that reflect the daily life of the city’s inhabitants during those periods.

A unique feature of Umm ar-Rasas is the Stylite Tower, a Byzantine tower located a short distance north of the site. Reaching a height of approximately 14 meters, it is one of the few remaining examples of this type of tower in the world. Hermits would retreat to its height for worship, lending the place a distinctive spiritual dimension.

Umm ar-Rasas is distinguished by its tranquil atmosphere and lack of crowds compared to other tourist sites, offering visitors a unique experience of exploration and contemplation.
