Moses' Springs
About 10 km west of Madaba, on the road to Mount Nebo, lies Moses’ Springs, one of the most beautiful and tranquil natural oases in the region. Here, fresh water flows amidst a captivating green landscape, offering visitors a unique experience compared to the rest of Madaba’s natural beauty.
Located approximately 150 meters below sea level, the area is characterized by its numerous springs that emerge from the rocks and irrigate the surrounding farmland. This water has fostered a rich vegetation cover, including olive, fig, grape, and pomegranate trees, along with citrus trees, giving the place a rare and verdant character. The water flows through small channels and cascades in a serene scene, creating a sense of peace and making it ideal for picnics and relaxation.
The Springs of Moses are linked to inherited religious traditions, attributed to the Prophet Moses. It is believed to be one of the sites associated with the story of water gushing forth from the rock at the strike of his staff, lending the place a special spiritual dimension, especially given its proximity to Mount Nebo, which is associated with the later years of Moses’ life.
The area also contains archaeological remains dating back to various historical periods, including Byzantine ruins that reveal continuous human settlement at the site. Its importance throughout the ages stems from its connection to water and agriculture.
A visit to the Springs of Moses offers a unique experience for those seeking tranquility away from the crowds. Visitors can stroll among the trees, sit by the streams, and enjoy the serene natural surroundings, revealing another facet of Madaba’s beauty, far removed from the typical tourist routes.
