Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration

The Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration is located in the heart of Madaba’s Old City, near its most prominent archaeological sites. It is considered one of the most important centers specializing in the preservation of mosaic art in Jordan and the region. Founded in 1992 as a specialized school, it became a formal institute in 2007 and is recognized by Al-Balqa Applied University and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The institute offers a two-year professional program designed to train students in the design, execution, and restoration of mosaic panels, using modern scientific methods that combine theoretical study with practical application. This program qualifies graduates to work on archaeological restoration projects and contribute to the preservation of Madaba’s renowned artistic heritage.

The institute’s role extends beyond education to include participation in actual restoration work at archaeological sites in Madaba and other areas of Jordan. Students and graduates contribute to the maintenance of historical mosaics dating back to the Byzantine era, providing them with a practical experience that strengthens their direct connection to heritage.

The institute also attracts students and trainees from within Jordan and abroad, in addition to offering training programs and scholarships, especially for members of the local community, as part of its efforts to support traditional crafts and enhance their role in cultural and economic development.

A visit to the institute offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to observe students at work and learn about the stages of mosaic production, from cutting the stones to their precise installation. Visitors can also participate in short workshops that allow them to experience this art firsthand and purchase handcrafted pieces that reflect Madaba’s identity and heritage.

Today, the institute embodies a living example of the continuity of this ancient art, linking the past and present and preserving Madaba’s status as one of the world’s most important mosaic centers.
