The first camp for the Hebrews after crossing the Jordan and entering the land of Canaan. Here, twelve stones were erected, taken from the bottom of the river as a memorial for the crossing into the land of Canaan. In the Old Testament, several sites were mentioned under the name Gilgal, and this was supported by the early Church Fathers and the traveler Pichanza, who described the twelve stones that Joshua erected upon the crossing. Thus, the site of Gilgal was established near Jericho.
