The lot of Dan
The name Dan in Hebrew means “judge”, meaning the one who condemns. They had no peace or comfort in their place of residence, and they had the smallest area among the other tribes. The Canaanites, the original people of the country, often disputed with them, so they asked for a place to add to their share. They sent five men from among them, who were brave, and they found a place for themselves in the north, where its people were comfortable and reassured. The name of the place was Laish, so they struck the place with the edge of the sword and burned it, then they rebuilt it and named it afterDan, their father.
