Mampsis (also known as Mamshit / Karnob) was mentioned by Bishop Eusebius (On.8:8), but not in the Bible. It is the only walled city of the Nabataeans, and is located on the main road south of Palestine via Funon to Petra. Antiquities dating back to three time periods were found in the Mampsis area: Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine. Among them are antiquities dating back to the Roman era, a military cemetery, and Latin inscriptions A bronze jug containing a silver drachma and a tetra-drachma containing more than ten thousand drachmas were also found there. The map of Madaba shows a wide door between two towers, and there is a large dome for a church.
