The city of Veliosium is located on the eastern side of the Nile branch of Veliosium. It was mentioned several times in Greek and Arabic sources. It was famous for its textile industry, and was a episcopal center since the fourth century AD. Many saints and martyrs lived there, such as Saint Anthony, Abba, Anuya, Aptil, and Isdur (360-435 AD). There are several monasteries and churches there.
