The historical city of Athrebs is now known as Tell Athrebs, near Banha al-Asal. It appears on the map of Madaba surrounded by a wall and has two towers. Inside the wall is a basilica. The city has two gates, one of which is high, which means that the city is built on a small plateau. This city was mentioned in Byzantine, Coptic, and Arabic manuscripts.

Coptic sources mention several martyrs in this city, including Didymus, Abba, Anub, and Sergius, a relative of the ruler Serpinianus, who ruled in the Middle Ages. It also contains a monastery of Saint Mary the Virgin, and several miracles occurred there.
