This phrase [Why did Dan settle near the ships – that is, he settled and submitted] appears in the mosaic of the map of Madaba. It is taken from the song of Deborah in the Book of Judges (Judges 5:17). This phrase contains a question of condemnation for Dan’s failure to help the rest of the tribes surrounding him and his being content to sit and see the ships of other peoples at sea while he was relaxed and did not do any other work.
